PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION

ANGOLA CINEMAS: A Fiction of Freedom –

MUICA 2019 also brings the photographic exhibition ANGOLA CINEMAS: A Fiction of Freedom. A nostalgic and unexpected journey through time, in a series of spaces that were once venues for entertainment in colonial Angola.

The authors of the project, Miguel Hurst and Walter Fernandes both from Angola, have documented these spaces built by the Portuguese during the time of the colonial occupation. They are old movie theaters – where art-deco meets experimental architecture in the African tropics – currently in disuse, abandoned or forgotten, and which invite reflection on the past and the future of a cultural legacy in a society historically marked by a brutal conflict.
